Why are you such a fucking negative person

Editorials on the ‘over-saturation’ of dystopian sci-fi and calls for ‘a new optimism’ are reaching a fever pitch, lately. This annoys me; I’m a negative person. Period. It’s what I get off on.

But this trend bothers me specifically because it demonstrates (an occasionally deliberate) misunderstanding of the genre.

Science fiction is about the present. The so-called “golden age” of science fiction was written at the height of western economic prosperity.

In short, it presumes that the optimism of this period was a product of extrapolation and not a byproduct of the prevalent mood within the culture at the time. None the less, the theme is frequently dismissed as either a character flaw or, better still, simple laziness.

Like sci-fi doesn’t have enough baggage as it is, now we need to make it PC. Like denial and ignorance were ever the path to enlightenment.

You know I feel the same way about Shakespeare. Often his comedies were divine in the same way that The Divine Comedy ain’t always so funny. They were intended to make people laugh at foolishness and pettiness and simply just being wrong. they don’t all have happy endings. If you read the character throughlines correctly quite often the endings contain real tragedy.

It’s the over simplification that gets me too. And more often than not that translates as laziness or not being able to understand subtlety.

    Definition: geek
Synonyms: dolt, dork, dweeb, fool, goober, goofball, jerk*, oaf, techie, trekkie, weirdo

Holy shit you’re right!…and all this time I thought it was the same. I hate to sound discriminatory but y’all sound and look the same. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nerds tend to be more expert about the field in question, whereas geeks are more enthusiasts. ๐Ÿ™‚
